The photo

- Plain white background, face filling 80–85% of the photo, from the top of the hair to the chin.
- Look straight at the camera, eyes open, mouth closed, natural expression.

- No head covering except for religious reasons, with the face from chin to forehead visible.
- Not changed with computer software.
When you need a printed photo
- Not at a Passport Seva Kendra or Post Office PSK: the staff take your photo at the counter.

How to take the photo at home
- 1
Stand in front of a plain white wall, facing a window or soft light, about 1.5 metres from the camera. Ask someone to take it at eye level.
- 2
Wear dark clothes, take glasses off, keep your hair off your eyes, and look straight at the camera with your mouth closed.
- 3
Choose the photo here, line up your hair and chin with the guides, and download the print sheet. Print it at a photo shop at 6 × 4 inch.
Our AI photo tools are not for passport photos: Passport Seva says the photo must not be changed by software.
Questions
- What is the size of an Indian passport photo?
- 35 × 45 mm (4.5 × 3.5 cm), in colour, on a plain white background. Passport Seva's ICAO guideline gives 630 × 810 pixels for a digital photo, with the face filling 80–85% of it.
- Do I need to take a photo to the Passport Seva Kendra?
- No. At a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office PSK, the staff take your photo at the counter. A printed photo is needed for forms handed in at a District Passport Cell, Speed Post centre or Citizen Service Centre.
- Can I print the sheet at home?
- For a passport form, no: Passport Seva says photos in computer print are not accepted. Print the sheet at a photo shop on photo paper, at 6 × 4 inch (4R) size, then cut along the grey lines.
- Can I change the background to white with AI?
- Not for a passport. Passport Seva says photos must be unaltered by computer software. Stand in front of a plain white wall instead. This tool only crops and resizes your photo.
- Is it free? Is my photo uploaded?
- It's free and needs no account. Your photo is processed in your browser and never uploaded to us.
